Foods
Something that Michael and I seem to desperately need at the moment is steak. Just some nice, standard, typical steaks. Which is actually pretty hard to come by. (I'm kind of tempted to head over to the Outback again, even though our last server was a little weird.)

While I've posted a couple of things on Facebook about hot sauces (which is another desperate need, good ones are hard to come by, even more so, actually spicy ones). I've decided to post about steaks here.

Every so often, I like to find a bunch of recipes for whatever I want at the moment (like ideas for chicken--so far nuggets and buffalo sandwiches are what I want to make). Something I really love is mushroom sauce. I know my little Миша doesn't like it! However, I figure either I'd eventually find one he DOES like, or when I'd make it, it'd only be for me. (I figure a lot of cooking would involve differences for the both of us.)

For me, a WONDERFUL steak dish would be mashed potatoes (I'm thinking with a few herbs thrown in, salt, pepper), spinach (cooked), mushroom sauce, and a steak. Most of that I know Michael wouldn't like, especially the sauce and spinach.

One of the other things that quite good is bacon and filet. My dad's boss used to send him a bunch of stuff for X-mas, from one of those 'order gourmet' magazines (you order meats, and they send it, then you make, it's actually really tasty, but expensive). The hardest thing is that the bacon cooks longer than the filet. You're supposed to cook it with the bacon around the steak, but my idea would be to cook the bacon a little early, still a little soft, but not fully cooked. Take it out of the pan, wrap it around the filet, then continue. It's good, but it's not the simplest go-together.

Not a steak, but something that I love, is prune and apricot lamb. I MAY be able to adapt it for steak, but steak usually has a thicker, heartier flavor, while lamb is better for sweeter or softer flavors. It would probably do well for ham, also, but I don't like the thought of a Hawaiian pineapple kind of creation. I've seen some recipes for it with parma ham (thin-sliced Italian ham). It's a cured ham (and ergo salty), so I figure it could be a kind of Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve type dish. The recipe was some prunes wrapped with parma ham and apricot skewers, but I don't really like the thought of prunes wrapped with ham. But it'd definitely work with one of those large leg of ham (which is either served salty or sweet, usually both, actually--at least that's sort of the Virginian way).

I love potatoes. I love potato cakes, especially. They work well with anything. I keep thinking them as a Jewish thing, dunno why. They're a perfect thing for lunches, too. I kind of like the thought of having some of those, something with some beef, and green beans with mustard. Course that'd be for me. Michael would probably want a LOT of potato BREAD, dork. (I've mentioned somewhere before that really really want to pack him lunches. I like the thought of us eating lunch together.)

As for random stuff, I actually really like broccoli and cheese. I don't know why, but it's really good. (I know that Michael doesn't like cheese, which is why a lot of food I like, we probably won't be sharing--I like a lot of food based with cheese.) I also really love, and this is the only time I like eggs, caper and cheese omelets. Capers are DELICIOUS little things. They're briney, salty and vinegary. I love them soooo much. They're very Mediterranean, I think mostly Grecian, but they're also Italian. I actually could just eat them as they are.

Anyways, I think that's all. The whole steak thing was spurred on by, weirdly, Dexter (the Miami serial) and how Brian made him steaks. The man didn't DO anything... I don't think he even CUT them, but for some reason, in the scene, they looked fucking delicious. (Sadly, Dexter's does not. However they're supposed to be really good nonetheless.)

Potatoes always struck me as quintessentially Irish, so potato products could be catholic or protestant but not jewish.

It's apparently Australian, or Jewish. Australia calls them potato cakes, and the Jewish call them latkas, or potato pancakes! I didn't expect the Australian... Then again, potatoes grow anywhere, and what else'll grow in Australia? It's a desert!
